A Place in the Sun: Student Symposium will coincide with the Petrie Institute of Western American Art’s annual scholarly symposium. While this year’s Petrie Institute symposium focuses on the life and work of Taos Society artists Walter Ufer and E. Martin Hennings, AMWA’s symposium will focus on the Southwestern region of the United States as artists’ muse.  AMWA has asked students to look beyond the work of Ufer and Hennings to address the broader role the Southwest plays in artists’ work.

The selected student’s paper will focus on the work of Joseph Henry Sharp and Eanger I. Couse, and how Native American peoples and objects influenced these artists’ paintings. Both artists collected Native American objects, and the presentation will highlight the relationships between these objects, their inclusion in artistic compositions, and representations of Native Americans in the early twentieth century.

Join us on January 8th for this talk, which will take place in front of the objects in the Collection, and consider, “What did artists in the Southwest consider art? Are the everyday Native objects that Couse and Sharp collected and used in their compositions pieces of art themselves?”

This program will be limited to a small number of visitors.  Advance reservations are highly recommended, as programs often sell out.  Tickets are not refundable for sold-out events. Guests can arrive as early as 9:45am to reserve their seat.  The talk will begin at 10:00am and last approximately 1 hour.  The  last portion of the program will be reserved for guests’ questions and to give visitors the opportunity to enjoy other paintings on view as time allows.
